The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was a historical figure who lived in ancient India around the 6th century BCE. He was influenced by the social currents of the times and developed his philosophy to address fundamental questions about human existence, ethics, the nature of reality, and the role of the individual within society. Like other major thinkers around the world, he turned away from traditional mythological and ritualistic belief systems to more abstract and introspective philosophical thinking.
